Extreme World Races: Norwegian-Canadian team will reach the South Pole today!

Last updated: 19/01/2012 // The Extreme World Races Centenary Race to the South Pole started December 15th 2011. The Norwegian-Canadian team, Framdrift, consisting of Håvard Svidal, Mathias Seim and Erlend Gray is due to reach the South Pole today.

100 years after Scott and Amundsen's epic duel, the centenary race to the South Pole is the toughest endurance race on the planet. Starting from the frozen coastline of Novo, up to 51 competitors will race to be the first to the pole, negotiating multiple crevasses, crossing snow bridges, and rising to 3000m on the high polar plateau on the way.

Fortunately, the question is no longer whether they will make it back alive, as was very much in doubt for the explorers 100 years ago. Now it’s about how fast the feat can be accomplished. Team Framdrift have been inspired by both Amundsen and Scott and have planned meticulously every detail of the expedition; how much rest their bodies need, how to melt snow to get water in the most efficient manner and different ski techniques are just some aspects the trio has explored in detail.

The preparations have paid off, they left the last check point without seeing any of the other teams. They are due to arrive on the Pole today, January 19th.
