A Winter Celebration to remember

Last updated: 31/01/2012 // Set in the idyllic Rideau Park, the Governor General’s Winter Celebration successfully took place on Saturday 28th of January, welcoming over 2800 visitors. Blessed with lovely weather, representatives from a handful of countries participated in the festival, bringing together the best of winter activities and local cuisine.

Among the stands represented at the event, notably the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Canada, various activities were offered, ranging from skiing, skating and snowshoes to dog sleighs pulled by  (sometimes too) eager Siberian huskies!

At the Norwegian stand, people were invited to participate in a skiing race, armed only with a set of gigantic skis in which one could fit eight persons on each.  Needless to say, this turned out to be a brilliant exercise in cooperation, as one was forced to have a certain rhythm as well as a good command of left and right –where particularly the latter turned out to be a crucial point!  In between the activities, one could “thaw up” enjoying a nice cup of cocoa or blackcurrant toddy, as well as trying out traditional snack from the various stands.

Surrounded by happy huskies, tasty maple taffy and cold crisp air, people were all smiles at the event, proving that the annual the Governor General’s winter Celebration is greatly appreciated and a tradition worth keeping.
