The Royal Norwegian Embassy in partnership with The Royal Canadian Geographical Society and Winterlude are hosting a seminar on our shared polar history February 6th at Libraries and Archives Canada, Ottawa. The Director of the Fram Museum in Oslo, Geir Kløver, and Norwegian-Canadian polar explorer Sunniva Soriby will give presentations.
The Director of the Fram Museum in Oslo, Geir Kløver, will share the story of Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen; - the first to navigate the Northwest Passage and first to reach the South Pole. What did his achievements mean to Norway as a nation, and how did Canada influence him as a polar explorer? Kløver will also present the new Gjøa Museum in Oslo, highlighting Canadian Arctic history and its links to Norway.
Norwegian - Canadian Polar Explorer, Sunniva Sorby, who recently returned from the South Pole where she took part in the celebration of Amundsen on December 14th, will share her reflections and photographs from her expeditions in the Arctic and the Antarctic. On January 14th, 1993, Sunniva Sorby made history as one of the four team members of rhe American Women’s Antarctic Expedition. They reached the South Pole, following a gruelling 1100 km trip across the snow and ice of the Antarctic as the first women’s team to ever reach the South Pole on foot without the aid of sled dogs or motorized vehicles.
The presentations will be followed by a reception. Welcome!
