Adjágas at Vancouver Cultural Olympiad

The Sami group Adjágas performs during the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. This enormously popular band will be performing during Globespotting at the Aboriginal Pavillion Thursday 18 February from 9:30pm – 12:00 am.

Adjágas last performed in Canada for an enthusiastic audience in Toronto at the IndigenoUs Festival at Harbourfront Cultural Centre, August 2009. While in Toronto they worked with Canadian slam poet Taqralik Partridge of Avataq Cultural Centre in Montreal. They first worked together at the Sami festival Riddu Riddu in Norway. Adjágas, from Sápmi, Norway are Sámi joikers, Lawra Somby and Sara Marielle Gaup with a band of musicians. The groups name Adjágas is a Sámi word describing the mental state experienced between waking and sleeping. Discography: Adjágas (2005) Mánu Rávdnji (2009)

The Norwegian jazz trio, Haavard Wiik Trio, is also part of the official program Winterruptions at Grenville Island during the Cultural Olympiad. Their performance is sponsored by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Canada.
