New agreement: Increased collaboration in education, research and innovation

During the CBIE conference in Ottawa, a new bilateral initiative between Norway and Canada was signed. The goal is to increase collaboration in higher education, research and innovation.

The agreement between Mitacs and SIU will create new opportunities for Norwegian and Canadian graduate students to carry out joint research projects and strengthen international research collaborations between leading industry and academic organizations. Graduate students from eligible higher education institutions in Norway and Canada have the opportunity to participate in a research project with an industry partner located in the other country, with time also spent under an academic co-supervisor in the host country.

-          Canada and Norway share many similarities and interests, and we believe that the partnership between SIU and Mitacs can help drive together cooperation between Canadian and Norwegian start-up communities in key areas such as technology, med-tech, and climate & environmental research, said Ambassador of Norway in Canada Anne Kari Hansen Ovind.

Students spend a minimum of 16 weeks and a maximum of 24 weeks on a research project in their area of interest, with the time dedicated to working on the project being split between Canada and Norway.

Mitacs is a national, not-for-profit organization that delivers unique research and training programs. For over fifteen years, they have supported more than 10,000 multi-disciplinary research internships, trained more than 19,000 students and postdoctoral career-skills participants, and supported more than 2,200 international research collaborations

The program is now under development and will be lunched in the spring of 2017.
